What is dialing up on its own?

I am running windows 2000 pro SP3, IE 6 (browsing), Outlook 2000
(email), Mailwasher and Outlook Express 6 (for news groups).

Seemingly at random my dial-up internet connection is dialed if it is
not already connected. I have observed this many times and using task
manager I have never seen an application that looks like it might be
responsible, often this happens when there are no applications running
at all. I am not sufficiently familiar with all the proceses that run
under win2000 to say if any of these might be doing it.

I have Norton antivrus and it has not reported anything and I have no
other symptoms of a virus or script. I am _very_ cautious about
downloading any email with an attachment (anything that is not expected
is deleted at the server using mailwasher) and I am also very cautious
about installing any plugins etc.

After this auto dialling takes place the connection just sits there with
no apparent activity and no app opens to use the connection that I can
see.

So what is causing this?

David

What is most likely doing this is some spyware/porn dialer. Download
and run Spybot Search & Destroy and/or Adaware (both are free). That
should take care of your problem.
