What is a "winmail.dat" file

My Outlook won't "attach" files, only insert them into the body of the
message. Then often the recipient won't get the file, instead they get a
"winmail.dat" file. What's up with this? How can I get Outlook to attach
files instead of insert them?

Using Word as email editor? Rich Text format?

Don't use Rich Text format - use Plain Text or HTML.

Try switching to plain text or html format and consider disabling Word as
your e-mail editor.

Summary: Do NOT use Rich-Text Format (RTF) when sending messages outside
your Outlook-Exchange organization.
