-> [OL2007]: Still sending Winmail.dat. Why? <-

Hi,

I have sent some messages to friends for the new year and some
of them told me that they were not able to open the Winmail.dat
attached file.

Now I wonder why this Winmail.dat file has been sent.

My message was not RTF, it was pure HTML, and also, following the
instructions from MS KB articles, I set all the options to
convert Rich Text mails into HTML before sending.

Tools->Options->Mail Format
Then by default "Compose in this message format: Plain Text"
And Internet Format... set to "Convert to HTML format".

Now, why is that Winmail.dat file still sent? It should never
be created since I never use Rich Text.

By the way, some people got the correct HTML formatted mail.
And some, all from the same ISP, got the Winmail.dat instead.

Any idea?

Check which mail format properties you've set on the contact itself. It
might be set to overrule the default.

You're right, some contacts have "Let Outlook decide the best mail
format", and some, the ones who seem to have problems, have
"Send using Outlook Rich Text Format".

Can I change this setting for all contacts at once??? So I'm sure that
no one will override HTML formatting?

Also can I set "Let Outlook decide the best mail format" as the
default way to send mail when creating new contacts?

AFAIK there is no way to change this setting for all contacts at once other
then exporting to an exotic file format (that is not in pst- or msg-format
but in csv or xls format) and remove the contacts from Outlook. When you
then import the contacts it will create new entries and thus takes the
default (which cannot be modified) to let Outlook decide.

Exporting the contacts to a text file, deleting all Outlook contacts,
importing the contacts from the text file seems to have worked.
It looks like all contacts with an email are now all set to
"Let Outlook decide the best sending format".

But, now, the next issue, the one with the address book is worse than
ever. A lot of people are there with the fax number filled out.

What is funny though is that the name appears differently in the
Address Book.
For example, say I have an email AND a fax number in the same contact
card, it will appear as two entries in the address book like this:

Name Display Name Email Address
Jordi Steve Steve Jordi (e-mail address removed)
Jordi, Steve Steve Jordi (business fax) Steve Jordi@+4122...

Strange isn't it?

This is by design. The fax number is a legitimate electronic address, since
Outlook can send to fax numbers if the appropriate fax software is
installed. The purpose of the Outlook Address Book is to show you all the
contacts' electronic addresses. If you have E-mail2 and E-mail3 defined for
a contact, you'd see those, too.

Actually,
I just noticed that there is an option to hide the fax
numbers from the address book in one of the add ins I
bought (Mapilab Toolbox for Outlook)...

And it does exactly this. NOw in the Address Book I see
only email addresses! Great!
