What does the Alt Gr key do?

Hello,
I am wondering what does the Alt Gr key do on my keyboard in relation to
windows xp? Does have any short cut use?

As far as I can tell, on my keyboard AltGr is exactly the same as
Alt. My keyboard is US-English; what's yours?

Well some of us are NOT americans (I know it's hard to believe, but
the good God actually has created others too!), we don't have such a
limited alfabet, so to access the extra letters, we have three letters
on some places on the keyboard like the key:

4
shift-4 is ¤
alt-grp-4 is $

Other keys have similar 3 different functions.
