Hello,
I have a laptop with windows XP home installed.I have been trying to use
some of the symbols and charectors used by using a combination of keys on my
keyboard like Alt Gr + Number etc to create a specific symbol or fraction and
it isn't working no matter what I try.My default keyboard layout is English
(United States).I also have English (Canada) and French (Canada)
installed. What can I do to fix this problem?

When you want to type the letter é (=char 0233), do this:
- Turn on NumLock. Check your laptop manual if unsure how to do this.
- Hold down the Alt key.
- Tap these letters in sequence: mkll (corresponding to 0233)
- Let go of the Alt key.
- Turn off NumLock

I suspect you never activated your NumLock mode.
