How do I get the Alt Gr button to do its magic

With my previous laptop (HP Omnibook XE3 running Windows XP Home) I could easily get the é character by pressing Alt Gr - e or the Euro symbol by pressing Alt Gr - 4

Now that I have a ew laptop though (HP compaq nx9010 running Windows XP Pro) it doesn't work and I have to go through the Alt Fn ASCII code routine to get these characters. Could anyone help me get the key activated

I'd really appreciate your hel

The Alt Gr 4 should be standard in Windows to give the € sign. Apar
from that, if you're using 'Word' then you can assign any character t
any shortcut using the 'insert/symbol' menu

The Alt Gr 4 should be standard in Windows to give the € sign. You ca
also put a shortcut to 'Start/Programs/Accessories/Syste
Tools/Character Map' on your taskbar to insert any font character int
any document. Apart from that, if you're using 'Word' then you ca
assign any character to any shortcut using the 'insert/symbol' menu

Regional & Language Options -> 'Languages' tab -> 'Details' button -> 'Installed services' -> use the 'add' button to select the appropriate keyboard layout.

Check in Control Panel - Regional and Language - Language page, click
Details and see what keyboard layout is in use. It sounds as if you are
on a layout that does not support the ¤ symbol - and possibly not even
Alt-Gr. Probably US. In which case use the Add button to select a
suitable layout, then select the resulting combination in the 'default'
pane at the top. You will probably need then to log out and on again to
bring that into use
