I am trying to use a microsoft devised template in EXCEL but do not know what
M.I stands for

Most likely stands for "middle initial," especialy if adjacent to
"last name" and/or "first name". The accepted abbreviation for an
entry for someonewho has no middle name is "NMI" (no middle
initial).
