What can Frontpage do?

Hi all,

I'm a software engineer working for a small company and I'm about take
over re-designing their web-site. I have to choose a tool to do this
- is FrontPage all I'll need? I know it's all relative to what I want
to do, so just give me some ideas - I just want to build a simple site
that looks good with a few clever things like menus that change when
mouse goes over them, etc. Also, will I be able to create animations?

Yes, Front Page is probably all you need.
Unfortunately, we are having serious problems with FP 2003
as I have just posted. 2002 was much more reliable.

You can do a lot with FP...from beginner to expert. IMO FP is a much maligned program...mostly by people that don't RTB or spend some time with it.

You will need a good image editor...Photoshop or Ulead... but lots of good ones out there. There are also lots of plugins/addons for FP...and at the risk of being stoned..may I say Templates?! Templates can save you a LOT of development time and make your site cool looking, some are free...some you pay for. All are customizable.

MOST IMPORTANT...is the SUPPORT you will find HERE...free...and the best.

It will do what you want, however you will need an image editing program to
make animated gif images.

Today, the words "simple site" are generally an oxymoron. The WWW is a vast
and complex network of a huge variety of technologies, running on a plethora
of hardware and software configurations. What looks simple on the web may
indeed be fairly (or extremely) sophisticated under the hood. How, for
example, do you make your "simple" web site look the same in all browsers
(answer: you don't - but with a lot of work and know-how, you can get
acceptably close)? And "a few clever things" quickly escalates to a
full-blown web application before you know what hit you (usually, it's all
those web sites you've visited that do the clever things, giving you more
ideas - a web site is never "finished").

Why do I begin with all of this? Well, your question kind of reminds me of
the old joke in which a guy walks into a doctor's office with a broken arm,
and asks "will I be able to play the piano when it's healed?" The doctor
replies "sure" and the guy is amazed, because he never could play the piano
before. Sure, FrontPage can automate a lot of your web development routines
for you, write HTML and even some smattering of JavaScript for you, and even
check behind you to make sure you haven't left anything out. It can
certainly automate the development of "mouseovers" as you mentioned. Of
course, "mouseovers" are one of the most elementary aspects of JavaScript
and HTML.

So, in conclusion, the point of all this is to say that Microsoft FrontPage
is an excellent web development toolkit, that can do just about anything
that any other web development toolkit can do, and some things that others
cannot. But a toolkit is only as good as the builder using the tools. Do
yourself a favor and learn something about HTML and the WWW if you want to
get the best out of it.
