WEP Key instructions in XP incomplete

How do I specify what (hex or ???) kind of key I'm using?
Xp will not take a ten digit key, always reverts back to
eight digits.

You're a bit sparse in details, and therefore difficult to answer
without knowing what you're seeing and inputting ... but assuming you
have the SP2 update to WinXP, I'd just let the 'Wizard' do the work for
you and not worry about hex or asci. Following is a good TechNet site
