Can't change WEP key in XP Pro

My wireless router and card have been working fine
(LINKSYS WRK54G and WPC54G respectively. On the
recommendation of LS support, I configured my router
today for WEP security. The first time I tried to connect
using the adaptor in my laptop (XP Pro) I was asked for
the key. Mistakenly, I typed in the 10 digit string I had
used to generate the key.
That string is what is now stored in the
Connections/Properties/Wireless Network/Preferred
Network/Properties/Network Key boxes, which is what
Windows uses by default when connecting.

Needless to say I get a 'limited or whatever' connection
message.
If I replace the 10 digit string in the key boxes above
with the 24 digit key, I can connect fine. But when I go
back to the same properties box to see if the new key has
been saved, it hasn't. Thus, when reconnecting, the
connection hangs again.
Also, if I change to manual connection, the key request
box will appear each time I connect. This box too, has
the incorrect 10 digit string - if I replace it I connect
fine.
What gives/how do I get Windows to save the correct
key?????

Just a guess - on the laptop do you both Linksys software installed and
Wireless Zero Configuration service running?

Use one or the other, but not both.
