Hi Guys,
Dual boot. Win XP Home on one drive Win 98 SE on the other. Can access Win
98 SE. Contact broadband, post and receive messages & e.mail.
Cannot get past welcome screen on Win XP Home.
Have tried Safe Mode, re-booted to no avail. Have tried 'Boot to last known
good configuration' to no avail. Restore point not available in safe mode.
Any ideas?
I can of course use Win 98 but prefer Win XP, got a lot of files on that
platform.
Help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Classic 42,

If you dual-boot between Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Home Edition, did
you install Windows XP Home Edition on the FAT32 File System? If you did,
you can move the files off that partition thru Windows 98 SE and onto the
Windows 98 SE, as a method to back up your Documents Folders.

I triple-boot on two Hard Drives, between Windows 98 SE, Windows ME and
Windows XP Home Edition all on FAT32 File System, giving me access to all
files and folders on all the Hard Drives.

Have you tried running Scandisk from Windows 98 SE on the XP Home
Edition partition? I do it all the time.

Are you being logged out immediately after logging in? If so, see if the
following applies.

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe

Or the problem may be an incorrect system drive letter.

Hi Creator,
Thanks for the input but I have XP as NTFS
(250 Gb) and Win 98 (80 Gb)as Fat 32 so cannot transfer between drives.
Haven't tried Scan disc on Win XP yet, but have a feeling it will not work.
Now the machine will allow me to boot past the Welcome screen but cannot
access broadband. Strange or what?
Thanks again for your help.

William,
Thank you for your very concise reply, I will try the first
solution in a while. I do have LavaSoft AdAware and have run it as part of
weekly maintenance recently, maybe it is that. If I may I will update the
group.
Cheers.

Hi Guys.
Have discovered the problem. It was SYGATE FREE firewall. Must
have been during one of the upgrades that a file/s was corrupted.
Uninstalled broadband, stopped SYGATE and just let windows firewall
run.Re-installed broadband and all now appears well.
Thank you both for your replies.

Hi Classic,

If you can access the XP Desktop, I would schedule a complete Chkdsk. Do
it by going Start into My Computer. Locate your XP Drive. Right-click and
click Properties. Now click Tools. Under Error-checking click Check Now.
Check both choices. Click Start and answer Yes to Schedule.

OR

I would partition the 80 GB Hard Drive into three partitions. One 30 GB,
One 30 GB and the other 20 GB. Install Windows 98 on the first partition.
Install Windows XP on the second and use the third to hold image snapshots
of your operating systems, so you don't need to manually install Windows XP
and the programs running under it seperately. Use the FAT32 File System or
all three partitions. Note: Using Fat32 allows you access to files in both
operating systems, plus allows you to share the My Documents folder between
both operating systems.

I would partition the 250 GB Hard Drive into smaller partitions.

The larger the partition is, the longer it takes to complete Chkdsk and
to Defragment the Hard Drive partition.

Just my opinion. And if you have a Graphics Card with a TV Tuner
built-in, you can leave the 250 GB Hard Drive complete and just record TV
programs to it and watch them later. I have my system set up like that. Sort
of a Self-built Tivo Setup.
