Search Companion Pane Does Not display the standard Win XP Layout

I have WIN XP home that needed several "Repair" procedures from the XP CR-ROM
because of a damaged registry and no Win boot. Everything elseis now working
well, but the Search Companion pane has a totally new, non-XP, layout, and
there is no Preference available to reset it. It seems to perform the search
function OK, but it is very awkward to use. How can I restore the standard,
blue, WIN XP Search Screen???

That sounds like you may have the "Classic" search enabled. Try this:

Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines
themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in a
suitable location as search.reg - making sure that the default .txt
extension doesn't appear in the file name (Save as type = All Files).
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\CabinetState]
"Use Search Asst"="yes"

To undo the above, use this:

-------- cut after this line -----------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\CabinetState]
"Use Search Asst"="no"

Sorry, I receive message when I try to install the entry, that it is not in "registry script format and can only import binary files from within the Reg Editor."

UPDATE: Got to install the registry entry as you described, but it made no
change to my search display. I should also add that all my folder view panes
have the correct entries, but also lack the WIN XP "blue" format/background.

Hi John A.,

Try to reinstall the Search feature.

In the Run dialog box type the following.

%windir%\INF

The INF folder should appear, locate "srchasst.inf" and right-click and
select install. If you are prompted to insert your Windows XP SP2 CD
then either point to the "windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" folder, if
present or insert your Windows XP SP2 installation CD.

NOTE: You may need to unhide to folders and files. Also you may need to
show file extensions. All this can be done in Folder Options located in
the Control Panel.

Thanks guys, for the helpful input. But the registry/XP files were so
corrupted that I had to do a complete new XP install. Fortunatley I had
backups of almost all of my documents, so it wasn't too traumatic!
