Weird sound issue

ok, here's my problem:

I uninstalled some DirectShow codecs using a 3rd party software but it seems
some system files heve been deleted too in the process.

So now I have ALL of the following symptoms:
- NO volume icon in taskbar (yes, corresponding checkbox in Sounds and Audio
Devices IS checked)
- NO system sounds playing (if I try assigning a sound scheme and select
whatever sound event, I have the Play icon GRAYED)
- no sounds when browsing web pages
- movies are playing OK, WITH sound.

Any solutions? Maybe some magic .REG for restoring audio to a default state
? It's killing me this problem... :(

1. Check the original post. There are no Bold letters shown.
2. Using all caps to shout does not seem to be warranted. You will get no help from anyone with
that attitude.
