Weird problem... any XP network wizards?

Strange problem.
Basically a simple setup.
Standalone xp pro installation... I connect to the internet with DSL... no router, only my
DSL modem.
Recently, when I boot up my computer, I have no connectivity. I didn't add any new
programs, etc.
The connection says connected in network connections.
When I open any internet app, in my firewall (Outpost) I don't see the app, only svchost
trying to connect.
I had setup a while back, a pppoe *dialup* account to my DSL, in order to change my ip
address for tests. If I open that connection, everything works. If I disconnect,
everything stops again.
So, I know the modem works, and the connection works.

Sometimes, when I bootup everything works. I'll save a restore point, so I can revert to
it, if my connection doesn't work on bootup. But, if I go back to that retore point, when
my connection isn't working, it still doesn't work.
This is baffling me. I have good knowledge of XP, but not really anything network
related.
I'm anal about security, have run a ton of scans, including rootkit scans, and everything
comes up clean.

The key to me, is the part where apps aren't showing up, only svchost.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?
I was going to run the xp winsock tcp fix, but it's from the early 2000s, and I hesitate
to use it.
Any help would be appreciated... thanks so much!

Buy a router

a modem must either have a program that starts it.. and that program must be
in your start up, or as a service...

OR you must start the connection as you describe..

as someone else mentioned a router maintains the connection with the
internet and such problems don't exist....

I believe that something happened to the program that normally starts your
connection..

you would probably try to find that out or call your ISP support since they
are the people who usually give out the applications that do this.

There's really no program, it's a normal xp *LAN or High-Speed Internet* connection, in
network connections... always on. I never installed the program my ISP tried to install.
I imagine it is a service, and something may be corrupted, but since it's intermittent, I
haven't a clue.
The first time it happened, I did a chkdsk, and after rebooting it was fine.
But since, that doesn't work.

The modem is basically a router/NAT. This problem is recent... over the past few weeks.
For years, all has been cool.
As I said in my OP, the apps don't show up as trying to access the net, only svchost
shows.
When things are working right, only the app shows up. So, I'm thinking something's going
weird with svchost, or in my registry. But since it sometimes works, it's hard to pin
down.

Thanks for the thoughts... more are always welcome ;)

Or just place the PPPoE "dial-up" connection "applet" in the Start-up
folder.

Thanks... It's no problem justing clicking the link on my desktop... but doing so doesn't
solve the problem I'm having.

it might be a setting inside the router modem..

since there are 2 modes.. always on, or start after you click on the
connection in windows

see the manual of the router for this..

Are you actually *launching* a PPPoE network connection with your DSL
username and password? It sounds like you aren't, and you need to.

Would suggest that you get a router, these are cheap and trivial to
configure. You will have to set the router to PPPoE with your username and
password, but then you won't have to do anything on the PC.

he answered to me that its actually a router that he has..

what I suggested to him was that the router had been configured to work with
PPOE and not "always connected mode"

He should check inside the router settings

Interesting, since that directly contradicts his original post, where he
says "no router".

I know but here is exactly what he said to me after I told him to get a
router

"The modem is basically a router/NAT. "
