Weird one

I have a series of automated procedures and macros that read text files into
Excel spreadsheets and then send the spreadsheets to various recipients, some
via FTP to a server and some via email to individuals.

The server where the Excel processing takes place (running Excel 2002)
produces numerous spreadsheets, all openable and readable on that server. One
of the spreadsheets is fine when it's FTPed, but when it's attached to an
email, it's corrupted. Opening it gives the message: "<Filename> cannot be
accessed. It may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only
location ... " Then I click "Cancel," and it opens, attempts repairs, but
"Damage to the file was so extensive that repairs were not possible." The
data seems to be there, but the formatting (bolding, column widths, etc.) is
gone.

This only happens with this one spreadsheet out of 30 or so, and only when
it's attached to an email. It's not a large file and has no particularly
exotic features. What the heck?

Yes, the file does not actually exist in that location despite the matching
size and date.

When the file is sent: is it closed? has it been saved on to the HDD?

or is it in a temporary location?

Yes, the file is closed and saved on the hard drive, along with a
couple dozen others, all of which also get emailed with no problem
by the automated process.
As I said, this one file is openable there and is uncorrupted
at the destinations to which it's FTPed. In fact, I can FTP it to my
own PC and then email it elsewhere manually and it arrives uncorrupted.
?????

Thanks for your interest.
