Excel cannot open the file...

I am trying to open a spreadsheet in .xls format in Excel 2007 using Vista
Business. It gives me the following error: "Excel cannot open the file
'(filename)'.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid.
Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension
matches the format of the file." I receive this error message routinely (i.e.
several times per month) always on different files. I've tried the "Open and
Repair" option of Excel with no luck. I’ve copied to my flash drive and
tried another computer…still no luck. I have tried to save in the .xlsx
version, but I had the same problem. I have tried a total of 4 different
computers, 2 of the computers using Excel 2003 with Windows XP. Still, no
luck. I made a duplicate of the file, I’ve emailed the file, but nothing
works. I finally gave in and opened the file. When I did open the file, it
was all little boxes throughout the entire spreadsheet. I even tried to open
it in "OpenOffice.org" and got the same result. There is nothing special in
any of these 4 spreadsheets...just basic formulas...no charts or macros.
Some of these spreadsheets were created new in Excel 2007, and some of them
were created in Excel 2003. This problem has been happening only since I
upgraded to Office 2007. It's getting SO frustrating recreating these
spreadsheets. Doesn't anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I am faithful at updating Office, Vista, my Virus (AVG) software, and
my Spyware (Ad-aware) software. I really hope that someone can help me
resolve my issue.
