Web pages and system restore blank

Hi All,
I installed some software, an Access Runtime app, on an XP SP2
machine. It's also running IE 7 B3.

Since then, many webpages come up blank, search boxes like at Google
don't work, and worst yet, system restore just brings up a blank window. I
uninstalled the software, but that didn't fix it. I'd love to do a system
restore, but again, its window is blank.

The software I installed runs the following scripts. I would guess
one of these did the damage...

msiexec /q /i OSP.MSI
mdac_typ.exe /q /C:"setup /QNT"
vbrun60sp6.exe /q
msiexec /q /i ACCESSRT.MSI

I've searched for fixes to this sort of thing, and have tried a whole
bunch of things:

Installed Scripting engines (5.6)
Reinstalled Java
Reinstalled .Net 2.0
Ran olereg.vbs fix
Reregistered MANY dlls by hand

Nothing seems to help. What else could make system restore blank, web
pages blank, and searchers like google not work???

Without knowing which you have re-registered:

Go to Start/Run and type each of these in separately:

regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll

Sorry, I should have spelled them out. I did these before. No dice.

Sorry to hear that and good luck! Keep us posted with your progress.

Hi Kelly,

Unfortunately, there is no progress. The two affected PCs weren't
mine. They belong to a very good friend that should have known better than
to let me test an install on his systems, so I had to get them fixed.

After two non-productive days trying ever more esoteric fixes, I felt
I had to give it up. I did a repair install of XP on one PC. That got it
to 99% of where it was before the problem. The other PC was a Toshiba
laptop with a factory image disc that I had to use to restore it.
Fortunately, they hadn't had it long, and didn't loose anything but their
AOL setup. (I'll mostly resist the urge to comment on how big a loss that
was.)

The problem was with browser windows. Also, I know the error was
caused by something in an Access 2002 Runtime install I did. Some pages
(like Comcast's default page, and the System Restore Wizard) would open
blank. HTML, PHP, CGI, Java... something wasn't getting processed
correctly. I've tried to recreate the problem on one of my own machines,
but haven't been successful.

Before resorting to the reinstalls, I...

reregistered a multitude of DLLs
reinstalled the scripting engines
reinstalled java
reinstalled .Net framework
reinstalled IE
ventured into some very dark corners in the registry

No luck.

This was the first time I can recall, between myself, my fellow local
geeks, the web, and usenet, that I ever had a Windows problem that TOTALLY
beat me down. Beaten by a bunch of 1's and 0's. I am depressed.

TTFN,
Max
