Cannot perform system restore...

After running a bat file reregistering a few dll files (required to setup a
remote web access site) the Internet Explorer stopped working and the user
lost Internet access. Now Internet Explorer opens up with a blank screen and
non of the menus are working. I have tried to do a system restore to a
previous good configuration but all I get is a white box in a frame where the
system restore options suppose to be (same thing in safe mode). I have also
tried to reregister the .dll files manually from the run window and reinstall
the service pack 2 but nothing seems to be working.

Any suggestion on how to solve this issue?

Note! This bat file has been used in the past on other systems running WXP
without any problems...

The system is running WXP SP2 with all the latest patches.

These were the dll files affected:

Shdcvw.dll
Shell32.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Mshtml.dll
Urlmon.dll

Hi,

System Restore relies on Internet Explorer to display it's pages
correctly. I would suggest reinstalling IE which may eliminate the need
to perform a restore.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just out of the curiosity however wouldn’t
reinstalling SP2 update the Internet Explorer installation?

Yes. Reinstalling SP2 reinstalls Internet Explorer as well. Q318378 also
says that. Before that, you can try one of these methods to repair IE
compnents.

Type these commands from Start, Run:

regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml

Repairing Internet Explorer using INF file:

Reinstall Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP:

When you're prompted for the updated system files:

Case 1: If you've installed a Service Pack (1 or 2) after you installed
Windows XP, mention the path as follows:

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

Case 2: If you have a Windows XP Operating System CD integrated with the
latest Service Pack, simply point to the following path:

X:\i386

Where X:\ is the CD-ROM drive-letter.
