System Restore Problem

Can anyone recognise this problem. Using XP with SP2.Tried a couple of
system restores but can't restore to any earlier dates selected.Restarted
machine and pressed F10 and receive error message "Stop C 0000218 (Registry
File Failure) The Registry cannot load the hive file
\SystemRoot\system32\config\SECURITY or it's log or alternate. It is
corrupt,absent or not writable"
Have looked at KB and have not found anything that is applicable. Something
similiar exists but the fix seems to apply to non OEM installed operating
systems and error message has SOFTWARE as opposed to SECURITY. Can anyone
suggest a cure or the possible cause for this. Everything apart from System
Restore seems to be OK and I know a lot of folks don't bother with S/R.
Should I delete the S/R points because I dont seem to be able to access them
anyway. Thanks in advance Mary Q.

It seems as if sometimes SR get corrupted, and you have to remove all
restore points and start over. But before you do that, see MS-MVP Bert
Kinney's website, which has everything you ever wanted to know about SR
and more: http://bertk.mvps.org/

Lem....Thanks for your reply, I was actually looking at Bert's site as you
replied. However I cant see anything related to this error number. Does the
error message mean anything to anyone.....Thanks in advance. Mary Q (not
restored !!)

Is your computer infested with any Norton/Symantec products? Many of
their crapware items are known to interfere with the operation of
System Restore.

Try disabling them and/or booting into Safe Mode then try System
Restore again.

Good luck
