System recovery

I have backed up all important file and want to perform a
system recovery (not restore)but it gets so far and on a
blue screen I get this message:

Stop: C0000218 {Registry Fiel Failure} The registry
cannot load the hive (File): systemroot\system32
\config\SECURITY or its log or alternate. It is corrupt,
absent or not writable.

Any offers of advice greatly received and yes I really do
want to perform this recovery.
