I'm trouble shooting a computer and having trouble in several areas so I
decided to restore the system. When I start System Restore a window appears
with a System Restore Title bar, but thats it, its a blank white window. Same
thing happens when trying to create a new user profile. I can not install
NIS, installation fails 1/4 of the way thru. I shared the drive and scanned
with Norton Corp Ed. from another computer and Norton reported no viruses.
Ran Spybot S&D and cleanout a minor amount of Spyware but nothing major.
AdAware SE will not retrieve the updates. Event. I've tried safe mode and
normal mode, last known good config. I've tried starting System Restore from
a cmd prompt as well, same thing. I noticed a blank screen when looking at
the Extended system services, local services appear normal. Any suggestions
on how to perform a system restore or fix this situation.

I installed NAV2003, manually downloaded the latest defs to a CD on another
computer and NAV found the Trojan.lodav.c virus. Issues resolved with System
Restore and all others noted above. Lesson: DONT TRUST NAV CORP ED. scan from
another computer.

Type these commands from Start, Run:

regsvr32 jscript
regsvr32 vbscript
regsvr32 /i mshtml

Logoff, and log back in. If that does not help, apply the .VBS fix available
in this page:

This may seem as "unconventional" as it gets, but "Hey...I'm an artist."
Anyway, after doing most of what you mentioned to no avail, and having ran my
Dell rescource CD for XP (only to have my system tell me that the version I
had was newer than the disk...and that it couldn't replace it), I decided to
go to "remove/add programs" and removed my service pack 2 (thus making my
current version of XP older or "worse than" the disk version). This WORKED!
But, I then went to Windows Update thinking that was a good idea...NOT! It
knocked me right back into "Blank System Restore" and the other associated
problems of "Norton Anti-Virus:Urgent Attention Warning" and "Windows User
Accounts:Invalid Number of Arguements." So, I repeated my program removal
technique, removing an earlier Hot Fix or Security Update (I don't think it
much matters...as long as you bring your version of Windows XP to a lower
state than the disk). Then, once things came back, I left the Auto Updates
OFF!!! Not to disrespect Microsoft (they are still most highly regarded in
the computer "food chain"), but it seems almost like how the auto industry
depends upon their products breaking down in order that they may continue to
produce. Just a thought. Good luck...everyone!
