Hello,
I was hoping some of you here could help me get this stuff figured out. I am ready to start trying to design websites for some small local business(es)? and I am having problems trying to get some nice pages put together for templates. I was wondering if anyone could help try to figure out how to make pages like those at http://www.interspire.com/templates/popular.php . Also where do most of you get the photos used in webpages like those on site above the ones that have pictures of office workers and the cool images that always have the color overlays on them. Thanks for any advice on how to get started. Bill

You could go out to your client's place of business armed with a digital camera
and get your own photos.... :-?

Maybe those "standard" stock photos are using models or whatever, who do that
(posing for photos) for a living. I don't know what to suggest otherwise.

The idea really is to ask what the client wants, and design to their
specifications.

Are you designing from scratch i.e. are your graphic design skills fairly
advanced?

Are you looking at using something like those templates at the site you've
mentioned?

Are you using Frontpage - this group is about the use of that product (help &
advice), not really about site design generally.

Hi Bill,

There are packages and web sites that offer graphics and photos that you can purchase. See http://www.photos.com for an example.

Your question is pretty general. Give us a specific issue
you want resolved and we'll see how we can help.

There are hundreds + templates out there.
Use Google to search for what you need. Also take a look at:

Maybe I was wrong, since using frontpage to design sites and site design are
closely linked but again, the group is about using Frontpage (you didn't mention
this, which prompted my response as it was), not about strictly about graphic
design or using external templates.

Since you use photoshop, a photoshop group forum might help (unless you already
use these)

Try alt.graphics.photoshop (if you can access it - but if you view through
browser, it should be no problem, if you view through news viewer/outlook express
ask your ISP to add it to your news server if you don't have it) for questions
about the issues you have.....members of this frontpage group might also frequent
the above photoshop group.....

yes I am using frontpage to do my webdesigning. I realize this forum os for the
users of the product but often the problems with builiding a webpage arent
product related but those who have mastered frontpage usually can help with other
issues as well. Plus I honestly dont know know of any good forums that are for
general web design.
To answer your question I am fairly good with building some of the basic
graphics in those templates using photoshop. the only thing I am having problems
with is I cant seem to figure out how to do some of the fading that they do I can
do basic gradient but I cant ever get the fading to look as cool as they do

First take a few weeks (or more) to really learn how to use a good image editor.

There are some good books on web design out there...I'll have to check my bookshelf for a few later and get back to you. There's a big difference between print design and web design although some basics are the same...color, proportion etc.

I usually buy CD sets of photo images which are royalty paid...surprisingly some of the CD's are chock full of Corbis photos...which cost a TON of money if you were to buy them direct from Corbis. The drawback is you will spend HOURS looking for something ONLY close to what you want - that's where image editor comes in!

When this fails...I drag out the camera and go shoot stuff myself...much cheaper $$-wise but time consuming. I charge the client more if I shoot specific images for them.
