web browsers crash

when opening IE it crashes, and next to modname it says unknown, i deleted
cookies, temp files, all that. I also downloaded Netscape Navigator and it
seems to work ok but also crashes often and also says modname unknown.
I have Windows XP Pro SP2 and it just started happening, what could i do?

I also forgot to add, i did scan for viruses and spyware and did a chkdsk

What programs did you use for the scan and did you do them in safe mode?

i use avast to scan, i didn't scan in safe mode because i figured if it was a
virus it would b pretty easy to detect so i scanned in normal mode
