I am running Windows XP Pro 32bit w/ Service Pack 2 Version 2002

I am blue in the face with the problem I keep Experiencing and Need help
figuring out how to fix it.

Windows Explorer (File Browser) crashes randomly all the time. Here is the
error information:

AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: explorer.exe
ModVer: 6.0.2900.2180
Offset: 000139f9

It also says this: An error output file will be created here:
C:\DOCUME~1\nls64\LOCALS~1\Temp\c9e0_appcompat.txt

When I go to this location on my computer c9e0.appcompat.txt does not exist.

I have search everyone possible on the internet and no one has the answer to
why this is happening or how to fix it.

Please post here if you have any information about this horrible Windows
Explorer Crashing Error.

You won't like my answer but here goes. Clean up your computer. Get a
program called "Adaware" and get rid of the
spyware(http://dw.com.com/redir?pid=1039960...://www.download.com/3001-8022_4-10399602.html).

Next click on "Start/Run" and type in msconfig. Click on the "Startup tab"
and uncheck anything that you don't need, which is most everything(you will
have to do some googling to determine what to disable" If in doubt,
disable. You can always re-inable later.

Next, get rid of your Norton/McAfee antiviur and get a good one. I would
suggest AVG from grisoft.com. It's free.

Update your installation of Windows. Go to www.microsoft.com and click on
"windows update". (I would give you the direct link but the MS jerks won't
allow me because I use Firefox).

And the last step: Download Firefox and use it instead of IE. It can be
had at: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

SLN420: I already run Spyware Doctor, Spyware Sweeper, Adaware, and Spybot,
my PC is clean of Spyware.

SLN420: I am very familar with this process and I have already minimized
what loads on start up.

Next, get rid of your Norton/McAfee antiviur and get a good one. I would
suggest AVG from grisoft.com. It's free.

SLN420: Right now I am running Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
10.1.1001. From my experience this is a very good anti virus program and I
would rather not have to get rid of using it because I favor it over others.
If there is a way to trouble shoot to see if this is what is causing the
errors please enlighten me.

Update your installation of Windows. Go to www.microsoft.com and click on
"windows update". (I would give you the direct link but the MS jerks won't

SLN420: I do this regulary and I in fact did this today and I have zero
updates that need to be installed.

And the last step: Download Firefox and use it instead of IE. It can be
had at: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

SLN420: I am a web developer, I use Firefox and have been using it for some
years now.

Any further information you can help with will be very appreciated this
error is VERY annoying and crashes everything in my task tray icon when it
happens (which isn't much cept for my Nvidia tray icon that allows me to
expand my desktop to my 2nd monitor for working).

Thanks a ton!

SLN420 - Any luck? I've got a client with a Dell laptop under XP SP2
with the same problem, right down to SAVCE. We disable SAVCE, it works
fine. Reenable SAVCE in any way, Explorer's crashing every half minute
with a faulting module ole32.dll. Can you check your application event
log ? I'm curious to see if we have the same faulting module. I've
installed Symantec AV Corporate on well over 500 machines on a number
of different networks, and I've never seen software problems that get
traced down to SAVCE. There's no other signs of adware/malware on this
machine. Though DH was well intentioned, the usual 'stop surfing
garbage sites and get a real browser' approach isn't a cure for this
one.

DH -
Please note that the Norton line is a completely different product than
the Symantec Corporate line. Norton's garbage, I agree, but SAVCE is
the best on the market, imho.

Here are the last five error event log messages from "Event Viewer" >
Applications

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x000139f8.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x0000b1fb.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x0000b1eb.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00018fea.

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, fault address 0x000139f8.

As you can see the first and last are identical, but the other 3 are not
they are unique error messages. Is there something else you wanted me to
look for? The only other error messages I got where "VSS" and looks like
this:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine
CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.

And there is also an error named "EventSystem" and looks like this:

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was 80070422 from line 44 of
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

I agree with you that SAVCE is the best on the market and I DONT want to
stop using it, so we have got to figure out how to get this problem solved
because WINDOWS EXPLORER crashing every so often at random is REALLY ANNOYING!

Those explorer.exe crashes are tied directly to what I'm looking for.
The fault address is just the memory address that the program was in
when it crashed. It's not uncommon to see the same address, but I'd be
hard pressed to say that the memory is the problem, so I think it's
inconsequential right now.

First thing I'd like to check with you is whether or not you get
crashes when you disable SAVCE. You don't need to uninstall, just turn
it off for now. Try using it for a morning, or a day, without SAV
turned on, and if you don't get any crashes, we'll know we're on the
same issue.

I am interested in the ntdll problem, as I get crashes with ole32.dll -
when it crashes the next few times, can you write down time/date, what
you did when it crashed, and what programs were open? Id est -

"10/26 - 5.32pm - Right clicked on word document on desktop - had Word,
IE, and an explorer window open to c:\docs and
settings\username\mydocs\."

Also, check under c:\documents and settings\all users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson . There should be a .log file in there
(drwtsn32.log i think it's called) that will log explicit details of
every crash that happens. We can pull some common ties out of that.

Mostly it's the "Does it crash when I disable SAV" posit I'm interested
in right now.

I'm constantly gettingthese problems with Windows explorer, it's driving me
mad, but I run PC-cillan on this PC, so it's not confined to SAVCE. There's a
conflict somewhre, and I'm buggered if I can find it.

It's a common problem that can be caused by any number of things,
really. We discovered the problem persisted even without SAVCE.
Likewise, I'm not sure where the trouble is - i just see what DLL is
faulting in the error logs. We checked everything out that we could,
even including a manual uninstall of all Symantec, Norton, and McAfee
products. We're looking at reinstalling windows next. We think it
might have been from a bad OEM image that Dell put on.

Good luck to you.

I think I've solved my problem. I had Ashampoo products running on my system
- Firewall and AntiSpyware. I've had them disabled now for a fortnight, and I
haven't had the problem appear since.

It's obviosuly related to a secrurity issue, but why?
