WD doesn't work...HELP!

I've had the beta version of WD since it first came out and have had no
issues until now. I was informed that a new upgrade was available and
attempted to install it last week. The install failed and told me that I
needed to uninstall and reinstall the program. I've not uninstalled and
reinstalled Windows Defender at least 5 times now and it still doesn't work.
The program shortcut available on the start menu cannot find the
"msascui.exe" file and it doesn't exist anywhere on my system when I do a
search. I've been searching every knowledge base I can find to see if there's
anyone else who has been having similar issues, but it looks like I'm the
only one.

One article I found in the Microsoft KB offered the following steps to
remove the installer files as well after I uninstall the program, but even
still, nothing works.
-------------------------------
Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click Window Defender, click Remove, and then follow the steps to remove
the program.
3. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. Type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
MsiExec.exe /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
5. Click Yes.
6. Reinstall Windows Defender by using the default settings.

Right-click on the shortcut on the STart Menu and determine it's pathname.

Go to that pathname and see if it's there.
What is the pathname ... Copy/paste in this post reply.

Also, have you done a CHKDSK /r any recently?

The path is: "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" and the
executable is not in that folder. I've done a search for the executable on my
entire system and it doesn't exist anywhere. The filenames in the Windows
Defender folder are:
LegitLib.dll
MpAsDesc.dll
MpClient.dll
MpCmdRun.exe
mpevmsg.dll
MpOAv.dll
MpRtMon.dll
MpRtPlug.dll
MpShHook.dll
MpSigDwn.dll
MpSoftEx.dll
MpSvc.dll
MsMpCom.dll
MsMpEng.exe
MsMpLics.dll
MsMpRes.dll
wgadef.chm

I have not run a chkdsk yet, but plan to shortly. I will let you know if
that helps, but I highly doubt it. Does anyone have any suggestions for
effectively uninstalling and reinstalling WD so that it actually works and
loads all the files I need???

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Adm!n!stratºr.

In safe mode (F8)
Try with CCleaner and or HDCleaner for a more thorough cleaning.

Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.
Note, in Options, Advanced, uncheck - Only delete files in Windows folders
older than 48 hours.
Note: uncheck Windows Defender in the applications.
Do a scan with all the check marks on.
Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.
Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.

Read Review at MajorGeeks

I'd recommend re-downloading Windows Defenser,and saving to a known
location--like the desktop.

After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. please disable or turn off
as much other software that always runs as you can--real time antivirus
scanning, any other antispyware software, (Stop all programs that are open
in the bottom taskbar)(system tray, nowadays also called notification area)
etc.

For the benefit of the community reading this post, please rate the pºst.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

#1 I didn't have to login as the administrator and #2 I didn't need to do the
cleaner tools. I did a search for any files that were still lingering on my
system after the unistall and I found files in two places:
C:\Documents and Settings\"User"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft

After deleting those, I disabled McAfee and downloaded WD again. Voila! It
worked!!! I have a feeling that the problem was that McAfee was still
running, but that's just a guess.

Thanks for your help anyway!

MSASCui.exe is the UI (User Interface) file which at its present version
should show 1.1.1593.0. Since you don`t seem to have it on your system and
all else has failed. Have you considered uninstalling manually? The problem
I sometimes have with conventional Uninstalls is that they don`t COMPLETELY
uninstall. If the software vendor`s developers write sloppy progs by accident
or intention is questionable. The latter is almost certainly likely. You have
to be familiar with and confident in editing the registry. Whatever you do
always make a backup or system restore before proceeding in Safe Mode. If you
are not confident with this procedure - consult an IT professional.

1. Navigate to the WD installation directory - typically C:\ Program
Files\Windows Defender.
2. Delete the folder
3. Delete reference to the WD signature file:

Start>Run type : "MsiExec.exe /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}"
without the quotes.

4. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/290301

5. Run Ccleaner in all modes. If you don`t have it, download from here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/

The registry cleaning element (Issues) is not the most rigorous registry
cleaner and I would recommend something more thorough with its cleaning
process since it only cleans HKCU (Handle Key Current User). I use `Registry
First Aid` for which you will have to eventually pay:

Download from Rose City Software which, I recall, will give you several
shots for free.

http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/reg1aid/

Only delete the `Green Flagged Entries` as a starting point. You have the
option to backup before you change anything.

Personal experince shows me this alone is not enough so you may have to dig
deeper :

Start>Run type "Regedit" without the quotes.

Navigate to HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows Defender - delete the entry.
Close Registry Editor and reboot your system into normal mode.

Dowload a fresh copy of WD from:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Good Luck
