First...your best bet is to download your
movie clips to a folder on your hard drive
before opening them in Movie Maker.
The reason for that is if you create a
..mswmm project file and try to re-open
it in the future for re-editing the original
source files must still be available.

As for a camera...personally, I've had
good experiences with Canon and the
following example should be more than
adequate for the task you describe.

Canon Powershot A590 IS

Go to the Samples page and download
the .avi video and try it in Movie Maker.

And...maybe the following article will offer
some ideas:

Hi Steph,

Try the Flip Video Mino or Ultra. You can get them for $100-150. The are
designed for uploading videos to youtube and are very simple to use. Their
filetype, AVI, is compatible with windows movie maker.

Disclaimer: I work for pure digital inc, maker of the flip cameras. Please
look at reviews on amazon and decide for yourself!

A note about my checks of Flip camcorders.... I don't have one, but I
received test files from Flip that show the AVI output from the camcorder is
Xvid encoded (they said it was Divx), ones the Movie Maker usually has
significant problems working with... but the camcorder provides an optional
somewhat lower resolution WMV file which works fine in Movie Maker.
