Wallpaper options list

My Wife used a photo for the desktop background wallpaper. She got it from
the My Pictures folder. We since removed this picture from the My Pictures
folder and of course changed wallpaper. However this picture is still
listed as one of the available wallpaper graphics when you use the Display
Properties dialog box. Where in the registry is this list maintained so
that I can clean it up and delete the pictures that are no longer available?

Same answer as in microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Wallpaper\MRU

Good luck reading the values in this puppy.

Double click each item to see what it is. Even though it's REG_BINARY, you
can read it in English. Sort of.

You may want to look at this...

I know that C:\Window\web\Wallpaper is where you store files you want
to see in the list. But if you "Browse" and pick up a picture from
another folder, this picture gets listed in the Display Properties
list of backgrounds. However, if you then delete this picture from
the original folder, the list still shows it.

There must be some place in the registry where this list is
maintained. That is what I am looking for.

Richard, see if that specific file is in
C:\Documents and Settings\Your or Wifes name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft. If yes delete it and it will no
longer show up in the Background Menu.

Hi Kelly,

You are correct as usual. :) I know what MRU means. Or I did know. Or I
will know. I seem to have suffered from a long Dumb A** attack coupled with
CRS. ;-(

BTW, clearing that list is a waste of time. All you have to do is open
Display Properties | Desktop tab, click on one item under Background and it
repopulates.

I found that if you use a picture out of "My Pictures", or even a sub folder
of My Pictures, for a desktop background. Then the pictures in that folder
will show up in the list of backgrounds available. If you move the folder
out of the My Pictures folder, then the pictures disappear from the list.
However, if you then move that folder back into "My Pictures" these photos
re-appear in the list (even if the pictures are no longer in that folder).
I even did a search on files by the name of the missing photo and found none
on the computer. (My wife uses my account so there is no separate account
for her.)
This leads me to believe that there is a hidden list somewhere, that defines
the pictures you used for backgrounds. Interesting treasure hunt?

What I did learn was: If you want a photo for a background, don't use the
"Browse" button. First put the photo in the C:\windows\web\wallpaper folder
(Windows folder for 9x). Then if you don't want that photo is the list any
more, move it out of that folder and it disappears from the listing.

Hi Kelly,

I have ClearRecent.Exe. I have one that Ramesh wrote also, MRUClean.exe.

I actually use javacool's MRU-Blaster. MRU-Blaster's database has 30,345
items in it. I think that qualifies as numerous. ;-)
