wallpaper images (thumb nails) not seen, only the application icon

When I open up the properties windows to change my desktop wallpaper
the images aren't displayed. What I see are the image names and the
program icon associated with the image extensions. The program icon in
my case is the Microsoft Image Viewer. Is there some way to fix this
querky issue so the images are displayed in the properties windows. I
guess what I want to see arre the image thumb nails, correct?

Click the View tab
Uncheck Always show icons, never thumbnails check box.
Click OK.
