Hi there,

Server is sbs 2003, client a laptop on xp connected to server on fixed ip
address but need to rdp in from time to time. However the pc 'go off'. At
present, it is set to be on all the time but it doesn't has the fixed ip
address. So still cannot rdp in.

I have posted a query last week regarding how to keep the laptop awake.
Found wake on lan. Got some feedback that I need to purchase some other
software to do this on laptop. Is there anything which Microsoft already
have and I would make use of it ?

TIA

A few clarification questiona - as your post is confusing at least...

You have a SBS server and said server has a fixed (static) IP address that
you went in and manually set.

You have a Windows XP laptop that gets its IP from where ever it connects
from. It is DHCP (Dynamic IP Address.)

I guess - and this is really an assumption on my part - that you need to
remotely connect tot he laptop from the SBS server (not to the SBS server
from the laptop.)

1) You should install a Dynamic DNS updater on the laptop. That way -
whenever it gets a new IP address, it updates it and all you have to know it
mywindowsxplaptopname.dyndns.org instead of guessing what its IP is.
www.dyndns.org is a great place to get what you need for free.

2) Your laptop goes into sleep/hibernation. If you don't want that to
happen - you need to turn off all mades that would do that. First - in the
system BIOS - if ran from a power adapter (plugged in) make sure it stays on
all the time. Then - in the Default User Profile in Windows XP
Professional - make sure it is set to always stay on (so it stays on when no
one is logged on.) Then - for whatever users might log into this laptop -
make sure their profiles leave the power settings set to 'always on'. Also
go ahead and disable hibernation completely. (Google on how to do each one
of those and/or read the manual that came with said laptop.)

You could try the Wake-on-LAN route - but being a laptop - I have my doubts
on its funtionality being there. Itr would make more sense just to leave
the laptop powered up all the time.

Hi there Shenan,

Thank you for the reply.

OK.

1. The server is sbs 2003.
2. The laptop which is in the office and connected to the server with a
fixed address
3. The setup in the router for rdp is set to the laptop's fix ip address
hence if I need to logon to the server, I need to changed the ip address on
the firewall setting.
4. The reason for the fixed ip address for the laptop is the laptop,
sometime work from home and rdp in the laptop.
5. when the laptop went in hiberation, cannot rdp in. So at present, it is
set the laptop to be on all the time. This should have resolved the
hiberation problem but NO, came up with another problem, the ip address
changed from time to time and the fixed ip address originally assigned to it
doesn't get picked up by the laptop.
6. I know the laptop support wake on lan, I have check with the
manufacturer. The big question is how would I use this features ? How to
setup without have to incurr additional costs.

I hope I have made the scenario clear. Thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Smiley
