W2k3 TS & XP - Can't login after renaming username

V

Scenario:

A users username was spelt incorrectly. e.g. "James Petterson" vs. "James
Peterson". I was fixing another problem for the client and he asked if he
could have his username fixed... sure, no problem. So I renamed the account
from "James Petterson" to "James".

I test and "James" username can login fine, from my remote PC. The user
edits his remote desktop connection on his notebook and he gets a U/P error.
At the TS login prompt we try login with "James" and correct password, still
can't login. I test from my PC, "James" works fine.

We try from his desktop, same problem.

I rename the account back to "James Petterson" and he can login fine??? What
is the problem? It's not a big issue, but it'd be nice to have his username
spelt correctly. Have tried technet, google, etc no luck...

Both of his (and my) systems are XP SP2. Server is Server 2003. Restarted
Server. Restarted both desktop & notebook. Power-cycled his router (hey, I
was running out of ideas...)

This is driving me nuts! Has anyone else had this problem or have an idea
how to resolve?

Thanks

May sound silly, but are you sure that the remote desktop users aren't
created localy on the TS server?

You're right, sounds bit silly. The Remote user's account ison the TS
server; how else would he be able to logon? There is no domain...

Well, it sounds like there's two accounts with the same name. One
locally on the PC, and one on the TS server.
If you change one, the other doesn't automatically adjust.

Procedure at his end was:
a) right click Remote Desktop Connection for this server
b) Change username
c) Save As
d) Connect
e) login failed

Even at the TS login prompt (after he gets the U/P error), and he types the
correct credintials he get the U/P error.

Are you saying that even though he's logging into a TS session, if his local
name is "James" and the remote name is "James" and the passwords are
different for the local and the TS session, it will not let him
authenticate?
