w2k system hangup when network enabled

I have w2k profess. and as long as I do not enable network system is ok
A short time after network is enabled system will hangup - no keyboard or mouse
I can only reboot. Currently have no service packs. Problem appears to be withi
configuration. Any assistance would be welcome.
 
Suggestion is still to patch to SP4 as normally recommended by Microsoft
