Microsoft Update Hanging...?

K

Kenneth

Howdy,

I have a Win 2K Pro system that seems to have an odd problem
getting security-related (and other) updates.

It was set to grab the updates automatically, but today I
got an error message when I tried to install some software
on the system. The error told me that the system needed more
recent security updates than it had installed.

At that point, I went to the Microsoft Update site only to
discover that the automatic updates had been failing. There
are something on the order of 70 (mostly security) updates
listed as high priority.

But, when I try to download them, the system hangs...

The "Installing Updates" window opens, and the cursor blinks
in the otherwise blank "Installation Status" field, and the
progress bar remains blank.

When I saw that, I looked at my Network Properties to see if
there was, in fact, anything being downloaded, but no, there
is not.

Next, I tried to un-check all but a few of the ton of
downloads.

They did download properly, but could not install because
they were "out of order" in the sequence.

What might be causing this sort of hangup, and what can I do
about it?

Many thanks for any help,

Hello Kenneth,

Stop the automatic update service and delete the C:\winnt\softwaredistribution
folder, then start the service again and try again to update.

Best regards

Hi Mainolf,

Before reading your suggestion, I remembered having this
problem on another system.

That difficulty was resolved by adding a key
(FilesNotToBackup) to the registry.

I searched that technique, tried it, and the updater started
working properly.

I do appreciate your suggestion.

Many thanks,
