W2K SP4 Install Problem

Looking for assistance with a botched W2K Pro SP4 install ...

The service pack was pushed down to my laptop over a WAN link using an
automated server-based application management tool.

The download appeared to run smoothly and the link was not disturbed
while it ran.

After the automatic restart, the OS only booted partially before
blue-screening with the following error message:

STOP C0000135 (Unable to locate DLL) Missing dll winsrv could not be
found in the specified path Default Load Path

Have tried unsuccessfully to reboot using all of the usual "F8"
methods, Last Known Good, Safe Mode, etc. The OS blue-screens at the
same point in the boot process with the same error message.

Does anyone have any ideas for recovering?

Would manually installing the apparently missing "winsrv.dll" into the
C:\winnt\system32 folder using a floppy possibly work?

If so, can I try any version of this DLL, or is there a new one that
is part of SP4 and required?

The original image was ghosted on to the machine, so I don't have the
OS CD to try an OS recovery using recovery disks.

Thanks in advance for any help offered ....

Well even though the setup of the SP4 appeared to complete I suspect it
was not able to copy a lot of files. The easiest way to recover is to
uninstall SP4 through recovery console. This is assumeing that uninstall
information was saved. Hopefully the script that pushed it down included
switch to save uninstall info.

Boot from Windows 2000 CD
Choose Repair
Choose Recovery Console and log in
cd \winnt\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst
batch spuninst.bat

It will take about 15 minutes to copy all the files and you will see
some errors copying some files. Once you boot up you still need to
uninstall SP4 through add/remove programs.

If the $ntservicepackuninstall$ directory does not exist then uninstall
info was not saved. The only thing you can do then is to do a repair
install of Windows.

Boot from Windows 2000 CD.
Choose install
Answer yes to the prompt to repair
