W2K Server Installation problems

I am trying to reinstall W2K Std Server on a machine with
a new replacement HD with larger capacity (old drive 60
GB, new drive 120 GB). No matter what I do I get a
Hardware Malfunction error during the installation. It
occurs just after the portion of the installation where
the message says it is checking for the Keyboard and
other devices & the screen may flicker. The machine
worked before. I tried several other smaller HDs from
various mfgs with no good results, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB,
30GB, Maxtor, WD, it doesn't seem to matter. I do not
know what file to view or if I can view a file that will
tell me what the Hdw Malfuntion is or what device has
caused it. I even tried to go back to the previous OS,
WNT4, and then upgrade. Still failed with the same error
message. I have tried 3 different CDs, original with no
SP, later version with SP1, and later version with SP2.
Still get the same Hdw Malfunction msg. I get that msg
with Computer Halted on a BSOD type of screen & the
machine is slammed, locked up tight. Hard reset or power
off / on is the only way out. I've tried formatting the
partition with NTFS, DOS, 4GB, 8GB, 2GB, still the same
result.

Is there ANYONE who has experienced anything like this
before?

AMD 1200+ processor
BIOStar M7VKD Motherboard
Tekram SCSI card for the SCSI CDROM
3Com 3C905B NIC
ATI Rage Pro 128 Video Adapter (I've swapped this out for
an ATI Radeon 7000 w/64MB in an attemp to resolve this
problem)
512MB Memory (I've removed & swapped this out in an
attempt to resolve this problem)
Various HDs, WD, Maxtor as stated above

PLEASE have pity on me.

Thanks Patrick. I've been using the F6 key to setup the
SCSI drivers. I've even removed the SCSI card completely
thinking that it was the problem, like you mentioned in
your tip.
W2K3 server installs with no problem but we are not ready
to commit to that move yet.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks

You'll want to boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks and *F6* very
early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup
to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional
drivers. Then
later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000
driver for your SCSI controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

I had exactly the same problem until I removed an
incompatible network card from the computer. During
installation, the system locked up tight and couldn't go
any further. Check the HCL to determine if the hard drive
is compatible with W2K. Can't imagine it NOT being
compatible, but worth considering.
