Can't install W2K on 80gb drive

John

I can't get W2K pro to install on my WD Caviar 80gb
hard drive, no matter how I do/don't partition/format it.
I can get Win98 SE to install (I actually want to dual boot
98 & W2K) but not W2k. Not even by itself. Tried no
partitions, 1gb for 98 then 3 gb for W2K, the rest
unpartitioned. No luck. Tried formatted with FAT (16 and 32),
NTFS, unformatted, everything I could think of. Nothing.
Even tried Partition Magic. And writing all 0's to drive
(with WD install disk). Still no luck. Any ideas/suggestions?
I just want both systems on the same hard disk. Thanks

Greetings --

It sounds like a defective hard drive. I've seen this exact
situation several times over the years. DOS or a version of Win9x
will install without a quibble, but no WinNT-based OS will go onto
that same hard drive. WinNT and Win2K is much more sensitive to
defective or sub-standard hardware than is Win98.

I've had very bad experiences with WD. I also had an 80GB
and it was dead as a doornail. CMOS could not even
recognize it. I called WD and checked for any recalls.
They denied any such program and would not take the drive
back. Hopefully you charged it with your AMEX so at least
you'll have some protection.

End of Story - Stick with Maxtor and Seagate!

Good Luck

I've purchased and installed at least a dozen WD 80GB Caviars, with nary a
problem.
