W2K keeps crashing to blue screen

B

Bruce the Shark

My Windows 2000 machine (Service Pack 4) has recently started to
crash at random times. Specifically, the error message shown is:

*** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x00000B49, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xF71F3C36)
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I did some Googling for the "DRIVER*" part and most hits seem to
suggest replacing various system files -- something I don't want
to do willy nilly. Does anyone here recognize anything about the
message above that might further isolate the problem? The only
new thing I've done to my PC lately is add an LG 4120B DVD burner
to it, which I bought without a driver CD, but the system accepts
it and burns fine...

Doesn't the STOP message indicate a specific driver?

If this only started after you installed the DVD burner then I would be
inclined to think that the drivers are causing the problem. Easy enough
to test, simply disable the dvd (temporarily) in the hardware profile.
If the error goes away then the dvd drivers are most likely the cause.

Go to the manufacturer web site and download the latest drivers for W2K:

http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main

Up to you to make sure that this is the proper site and driver page.

Feel free to stop wasting people's time and try engaging in a

I am inclined to believe it's a hoax. However, erring on the side of
caution, I contacted the law enforcement people and asked them to look
into it.

Five, I guess.
A penny for your thoughts.

You are in the living room watching your favorite weekly TV show. Your
significant other seductively calls you into the bedroom to join them. Do
you leave the couch?
What does that suggest to you?

What does that suggest to me?
Due to repeated indecent exposure (see above, heretoforeverafter

Maybe I am hereby advised my posting "privileges" have been suspended until
further notice. So ****ing what?

Are you capable of it?

how to use your news reader?

Why would I finally learn how to use my news reader?

I'll do that and see how it goes for a few days. Good idea! :)

I'm not 100% sure that it *did* start after installing the burner...
It's one of those errors that just "happens" when you least expect it,
so I can't remember if it occurred before/after the burner's presence.

But I'll download the drivers anyway and install them, thanks for the
link; I did try to find drivers for it originally but came up empty.

As for Jerold's post with a million MS Knowledge Base links: they
don't help at all, as I said in my original post. It's all geek-speak
to me, hence my posting here to try to get some plain-English help.

PS. The link to the driver may be refused, too far in the hierarchy,
in that case try: http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp and click on
"Device Driver".

Okay, I've updated my firmware (from v102 to v111) but I still can't
find a driver on LG's site; firmware does not equal a driver, right?
I would assume that a driver still needs to be installed?

J

John John

No, firmware aren't drivers as such. Firmware is hard coded or "firmly"
installed on a chip in the device. Drivers are on a file on the pc and
provide instructions to the operating system. Now that I think of it CD
/DVD drives don't usually need specific drivers as such. The term is
often loosely interchanged by different manufacturers because they more
or less do the same thing, they tell the device what or how to do. You
need not change anything else if you installed the latest firmware, in
any case it's a good idea to have the latest firmware for devices, the
old firmware could have had a bug or could have been unsuitable for W2k.

What software program are you using to burn your DVD's? Is this a
program that you installed recently, when you added the DVD drive? It
could be the culprit. If the error persists you will have to dig
further into the error message. Is there not a file name that comes up
with the error message, filename.sys? Look in the event log maybe
something shows there. And look at what services/processes/programs are
running when the error occurs. It could be completely unrelated to the DVD.

You need to ****ing well brush up on your bullshit, you ****ing dumb ****.
For example, many SATA devices have drivers in firmware to enable booting.
Interrupt driven ring buffer communications drivers have drivers in firmware
and not as a file on a PC. The Apple Newton has printer drivers in firmware.
Embedded micro-controllers have drivers in firmware. S900 ultra-wide SCSI
devices have their drivers in firmware. There are many others. Grow a
****ing brain and get your facts right instead of sprouting ****ing crap.
There's poor cunts out there that might believe your bullshit besides
yourself.

**** me dead. ****ing bullshit artists.
