If HP Support cast some suspicion on ACPI hardware devices
then I recommend you do this:
- Boot the machine with your Win2000 CD.
- Wait until you see the prompt "Press F6 to load other
SCSI drivers" (or words to this effect).
- Quickly press F7 (not F6!) a number of times. You will
see no feedback whatsoever on this button press!
- When prompted, select "Install", not "Repair".
- When the installation routine detects your existing
Win2000 installation, select Repair.
- Complete the installation process.

I'd be interested to hear if this solved your problem.

I have a similar problem with an HP Pavilion (yuck--not mine, thankfully)
WinXP system, but it doesn't "reset" but "restarts" the computer at
seemingly random times.
I thought I narrowed the problem down to McAfee VirusScan 8 2004
(whatever) since it would cause a restart when running PC-Doctor 2000 and
choosing the "VGA Info" or "PCI Info" modules--disabling the virus scanner
prior to running these modules caused no restart. But then the system
restarted when the virus scanner wasn't loaded (disabled, unloaded, and even
uninstalled) so I'm not so sure what's the cause now. A restart would also
occur when virus scanning the Temporary Internet Files directories and the
Microsoft Office XP office1.cab file--go figure.
I did the usual things of memory testing, swapping video card (well,
adding one since it has an icky built-in Intel i810--whatever--vid chip),
but I don't know what the problem is.
HP support said to remove the ACPI system hardware device and let Windows
redetect everything (since the system also has consistent ACPI event
errors), and the restarts didn't occur when scanning as described above, but
still when running the PC-Doctor modules (but PC-Doctor's website says to
disable virus scanners anyway so who knows--but why would they cause a
system restart??).
