W2K Dynamic Disk Spanned Volume

ARomeoT

Hello. I had on my system several HDD's on a spanned NTFS
volume, and one of the drives failed somehow. When going
to Computer Management under Disk Management, shows one
HDD missing, but the same drive as a seperate volume
unformatted, unpartitioned all by itself, and I am unable
to re-integrate it back to the origional Spanned volume.
Is there any way to recover from this? if there is,
please tell me how, I have searched all of MS knowledge
base, no info found. IF there is no way to recover, then
are there any applications that would be recommended for
data recovery. Thank you very much for time and support
in this matter.

volume, and one of the drives failed somehow.

But has this been fixed now, and if so, how?
unformatted, unpartitioned all by itself,

It is either:

- unpartitioned (= unformatted by definition)
- partitioned BUT unformatted

Which of those is it? Also, when partitioned, is it designated basic or
dynamic?

Now in general:

If the disk is 'bad' (i.e. has bad blocks) the advised approach would be:
make a sector by sector clone of the bad disk to an at least equally sized
disk with software that can handle bad sector on the source disk > add that
disk to the controller again > edit the MBR to recreate a type 42h partition
entry (can be done automatically as well). There's no guarantee this will
work, it is likely to work however.

If the disk isn't bad (a surface scan comes up clean) the cloning portion
can be skipped.

Our tool DiskPatch is able to perform all of the above tasks.

After recovery, DiskPatch can help protect your setup against corruption in
any of the following areas by backing them up:

- The MBR & partition table
- The LDM

This backup also protects from deletion or loss of one or more 'volumes'.

AGAIN: since I am not up to date with your actual situation I can not
guarantee anything!

Kind regards,
Joep
