I am preparing to upgrade a production W2k server with a
single processor to 2 processors. The current computer
type is "ACPI Uniprocessor PC". From reading NB article
234558 I should be able to install the additional
processor, then change the computer type to "ACPI
Multiprocessor PC" that is listed in Device Manager as a
choice, and have no problems - correct?
However, that same article references
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;237556
which has a "Warning" at the bottom that states:
"If you do have "Advanced Configuration Power Interface
(ACPI) PC" listed as your computer type or after updating
to the latest ACPI BIOS, then you cannot update to
the "ACPI Multiprocessor PC" through Device Manager and
may result in not being able to start your computer
correctly or at all. In the case of an ACPI HAL, for
Windows 2000 to support or recognize both CPUs using an
ACPI HAL, you must first update to the latest ACPI BIOS
which is fully compliant, then re-install Windows 2000 as
an upgrade so it can automatically detect and install ACPI
Multiprocessor PC; if it does not, your BIOS in not fully
compliant yet."
From what I understand from the above quote I can expect
to have trouble if I attempt to use Device Manager to
update from "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" to "ACPI Multiprocessor
PC". Am I not taking the above warning literaly enough;
in other words is "Advanced Configuration Power Interface
(ACPI) PC" different from what is listed as my current
computer type of "ACPI Uniprocessor PC"?
Any clarification would be greatly appreciated since we
can't afford to crash this production server.
Thank you,
-Stephen
