VPN client connects but cannot ping/map drives

Hi

I know this has been discussed widely ... but im begging for your help
here since nothing that i saw seemed to fix my problem.

I have setup VPN on a W2K server at work which has a domain. The
server's local ip address is 192.168.1.251 and i've set the VPN to give
ip adresses from 192.168.1.50 to 192.168.1.59 when someone connects.

I have first tried connecting from PC-Home. (cable modem connection
behind netgear router) It worked great at first time and i was able to
surf web, ping computers and map drives ...

Then i tried from someone else's house (in France!!!) (which has DSL
behind Linksys BEFSR41 router). He connects to the VPN just fine. He
can also surf web. However, he cannnot map drive or ping any other
computers (the serveur or PC-Home) on the network. When trying from DOS
cmd, i get error 53 (network host not found). I also tried making the
mapping from the IP adress instead of hostname and i didnt work either
(in fact, he can't even ping the server's ip hosting the shared drives
while all other clients can). I have made sure the client for MS
network is checked and that its using netbios.

Any suggestion are welcome here as it's driving me crazy (been working
on this for several hours).

If this can be of any help, i have noticed that the guy in France uses
same ip ranges as the vpn server.

In fact, the guy in France has its Linksys Router giving ip
addresses(DHCP is on) from 192.168.1.x range (router ip itself is
192.168.1.1)

Guess what ... the router behind the VPN server also has ip 192.168.1.1
(d-link di-704p) and all PC's in that network uses 192.168.1.x

Might it be the thing causing the problem (remember i connect just fine
to VPN but cannot map drives) ???

If its the case, you have to know i cannot change the guy in France's
router's ip neither the range it is giving ... And i would prefer not
changing the mask on the server's router cuz i would have to change it
on all other PC in the network .... May i just change the ips the VPN
server is giving or that would still be problematic (as 2 routers on
the extended network would have 192.168.1.1) ... ?

Both sites should use the difference IP range, Otherwise, you may modify the routing table or setup IPSec. check these pages for the details,

both vpn sites are using the same ip range Case Study - Both VPN sites are using the same IP range ... Since he is using the same IP range of the office LAN, any traffics to 192.168.0.x from the VPN ...

I have seen the first article and it seems like my problem is there.

In the solution:

"Since he only needs to access the home directory of the server which
is using IP 192.168.0.11 while his computer IP is 192.168.0.2, we add a
persistent route to point to 192.168.0.11. So that he can access the
remote server through the special route"

What is a persistent route and how do i setup it ? (is it on the
linksys router aka the router of the guy in France?)
