VPN and Internet don't mix

I have an XP Pro local network with an XP Pro remote
client connecting via a vpn. When the vpn connection is
up, the network and/or the client cannot connect to the
internet. As soon as the vpn is disabled, internet
connection is restored. This is true when we use a vpn
router-to-router connection, or XP software-to-software
connection. Any ideas on how to make these 2 get
along?
