vpn and filesharing with computer name

Dear all:
I used to be able to connect to a vpn server (xp-pro) and access
filesharing with the computer's name ie \\desktop1 however, for some
reason, I can no long do this -- the only way to access filesharing is
via local ip ie \\10.0.0.2 -- does anyone know why this is the case?

What does nslookup on the name give you?
Tracert?

How about on the IP?
