volume resets itself

hey all,
i just did a clean install of xp pro sp1 and when i lower the volume on my
laptop and then shut it down and restart, the volume is back to 50% instead
of the volume i lowered it to. why doesn't it save like it use to?

Try logging off, then shutdown, at least once.

still didn't work. is there a registry setting or something i can change?
