Hello All
The volume icon disappears on the taskbar when I reboot. I can go to control
panel, sounds and audio devices and check "place volume icon in taskbar" and
it's there, but if I reboot it's gone. How can I get the volume icon to stay
in the task bar? Thanks in advance for any Help.

Hello Jan.
Thank you very much for replying. This is the best group by a long shot. I
tried everything. Even tried to extract the file from my Windows CD. (short
history) I originally upgraded to Windows XP home from windows 98. Been
working great for at least a year and a half. I always noticed a program in
msconfig loading at startup all that time. I don't like programs loading at
startup if not necessary. Well a couple of days ago I unchecked it an
unfortunately deleted it completely. Every thing still works great except
the speaker icon in the notification area. I can show it manually but
everytime I reboot it's not there. Very frustrating. Thanks for your help
and Kelly's site is the greatest. I have fixed many problems using her
advice and tweaks.

The program loading at startup was systray. It's was listed as an exe file.
Now I can't find it anywhere.
I inserted the Windows XP disk, holding down the shift key so it wouldn't
automatically start. Went to run, typed cmd. At each prompt I typed the
following hitting enter after each.

e:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
Typed exit to quit the command prompt.

But it didn't fix the problem. I think this systray entry was there from
previous windows version but you would think I would be able to fix it
anyway. I'm stumped.

Hi,

Systray was used in Win98. The file you extracted is if you would have
received this error message while trying to access the Volume Control Icon:

Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

To have the Volume Icon remain in the Notification Area, you need to run the
edit mentioned by Jan:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

If this doesn not solve the issue and it should, it probably means you are
auto-logging on and you will need to follow the other suggestions given to
you earlier by Jan found here:

Password protect your account or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Disable SSDP and uPNP Services (Line 156)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I have also seen this happen to users who are using High-Contrast Color
Themes in Windows XP.

Hello Kelly Thanks for replying.
I have run the "save settings" line 54.
I don't auto logon and my account is password protected.
I have disabled SSDP and uPNP.
Yes I also have seen the icons in the notification area disappear but I am
using Windows default theme.
I found the systray in my windows folder but it won't open for me.
Don't know where to go from here, but I really do appreciate your help and
any other help you can offer. I'm stumped.

Hi there,

Thanks for telling me that the missing file is systray.exe locate
under WINNT\System32. I put back into the startup task and your proble
of mine solved.

You can located the file from {WINDOWSXPCD}\I386\systra_.exe
