When I do Start Run and type in cmd it brings up a box
that has: C:\Documents and Settings\my name>
What do I do after that?
I can type in D: after that and it will show the prompt

D:\> (which is where my Windows XP cd is)

I then type in expand and it tells me no files specified
If I try expand D:\ again it tells me no files specified

If I try D:\> cd i386
then this comes up D:\I386> (after this I can not figure
where to go or even if this is right so far.
My problem is I am not familiar with the prompt thing.
Most of time I just get message "files not specified" or
some other kind of message and it takes me right back
to where I started. So I need a step by step instructions,
if you do not mind. I really appreciate your help.

Original Question:
Error message when I click on Display The Volumn Icon it
gives me the following message. "Windows cannot display
the volume control on the taskbar because the Volumn
Control Program has not been installed. To install it, use
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel." - I have searched
but I cannot find out how to fix this problem. How do I
install the Volume Control Program?
(I found the article 319095 but it is not specific enough)
-------------------------------------------------------
To fix the problem:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM, holding down the SHIFT
key to prevent AutoPlay.
2. Open a CMD prompt and type:

Expand <CD-ROM_Drive>:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ %windir%\system32
\dllcache\sndvol32.exe
Expand <CD-ROM_Drive>:\i386\sndvol32.ex_ %windir%\system32
\sndvol32.exe

I do have sound on my computer. However, it will not let
me put an icon on my taskbar. Also my microphone does not
work.
