Volume control missing from task bar?

All of the sudden the volume control icon is missing from the task bar. When I try to turn it on I get an error the the volume control program is not installed. I have tried to install it as per MS knowledge based article- 319095. It still won't install, I get the error cannot input file sndvol32.exe. Can anyone help!!!

Is your sound card working okay? Open up the device
manager and see if any devices have appeared with a yellow
exclamation point in them. You could possible have a
conflict with the sound card.
