"Volume Control" keeps freezing video or slow to respond with Windows XP sp2

I few days ago I noticed that the main Windows XP Volume Control on the
Windows Mixer has started causing all video and audio files to keep freezing
and juddering and jumping backwards and forwards or stuttering whenever I
try to adjust the main Volume Control or any other volume control on Windows
Mixer or using the volume buttons on my keyboard even without the mixer on
screan. On top of this even when I adjust the volume control without
anything playing the slider keeps sticking, jerking or stopping and then
suddenly jumping to where my mouse pointer located is along the path of the
slider instead of sliding smoothly as it used to do before. Windows Media
Player 11 also randomly stops responding of up to a minute whenever I try to
play anything for the first time or move the slider along and has been doing
this ever since I installed it as far as I can remember when it first came
out. It's only now that I noticed the volume control not responding when it
started affecting the video when I wanted to turn the main volume louder, so
I don't know when it started malfunctioning, but its probably after I
installed MP 11.

Whenever I move the slider or press the volume +/- buttons on my keyboard
the Disk Activity LED on my computer keeps constantly flashing and the disk
keeps quietly grinding until I stop adjusting the volume then it stops for
0.5 of a second then flashes for about 0.5 of a second and then stops.

I tried rolling back the Realtek AC'97 Audio Drivers for my ABIT IC7-G
motherboard (3.2 GHz P4, 1 GB RAM, 50GB free disk space, Nvidia FX5700) but
this won't fix the problem. Neither will using the Audio Drivers that came
with Total Recorder (which I completely removed and then put back again but
it wouldn't work properly with or without them.)

After uninstalling MP 11 and IE 7 the Volume Control continued to remain
unresponsive, but when I uninstalled Windows XP Service Pack 2 the Volume
Control started functioning properly and smoothly again so I don't think
it's a hardware problem. As soon as I reinstalled SP2 again after
downloading the 300MB installation file the Volume Control began sticking,
jerking, stopping and jumping again. Other computes I have tested with SP2
installed have volume controls that behave normally.

I've tried uninstalling every piece of software I installed since I
installed MP 11, but this has not fixed the problem with the volume control.
I have run virus scans and removed the viruses and Trojans it detected in
order to try to fix the original problem with MP 11 in case it was a virus
but the Volume Control still will not slide properly and MP 11 still keeps
stopping respondinh.

I think my system has become corrupted by the things the Anti Virus software
might have done to my system registry and files but shouldn't reinstalling
SP2 and MP 11 have fixed the problems which do not occur when I go back to
SP1.

Can anyone please help me so I don't have to do a complete reinstall.
