Vista windows mail won't connect.

My computer is running Norton 360 virus program. I had a window pop up
asking me if I wanted Winmail exe. to access the internet. I unfortunately
hit the "no" button. Now on sending and receiving with the mail program, I
get "The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.purehost.com',
Server: 'pop.purehost.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E". Can someone kindly tell me
how to turn the send-receive back on?
I can't seem to find anything in the Norton360 settings that help.

Thanks!

Mike,
Have you tried opening 360, clicking Tasks & Settings, Change Advanced
Settings, Firewall Protection Settings, Firewall Program Rules, and
scrolling down to find WinMail. If it's set to Block, change it to Allow,
then close screens to exit 360.

I would not trust a security program that can't automatically
recognize and allow Windows Mail.

Any decent firewall should allow users to decide what they want to allow and
disallow. Unless I'm in error, even Windows Firewall allows custom settings
for program access/restriction.

Custom firewall settings are fine for special circumstances.
My point is that a user should not have to intervene in the
firewall settings just to get his email going. The firewall
should have enough 'intelligence' to recognize and allow
standard programs. Windows Firewall does.

.. . . but Mike said he had mistakenly disallowed Winmail. Norton was simply
following directions. The 'error' was Mike's, not Norton's. And obviously
Window's Firewall isn't going to challenge Winmail, both being MS products.

This Winmail debacle will become moot after enough people migrate to Windows
Live Mail (WLM) - if MS kills the beta bugs. I wonder: 1) why MS abandoned
Winmail after such a short time; 2) why MS is relying on uncompensated MVP's
(& other knowledgeable folks) to provide transitional support to WLM?

My take is that the OP should never have been presented with a
question like "Do you want to allow winmail.exe to access the Internet."
It only mystifies and confuses the average computer user.

The WLM versus WM issue is going to get more and more interesting.
I would think that Microsoft will certainly have to make some sort of
decision by the time SP1 for Vista is finalized.

Uninstall Norton and don't replace it with McAfee.
Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
should be uninstalled.
