Vista user profile

I'm looking for a little help, i'm having this problem with logging onto my
vista user profile. When i try to log on i type in my password and hit the
arrow and for about 30 seconds the blue circle rotates, then my screen goes
either black or grey i can still see the mouse pointer but nothing else. I
can bring up the task manager i go to new tasks and type in explorer and try
to bring up the desktop nothing happens. But if i go to processes in the
task manager and click show processes from all users, then go to new tasks
type in explorer my desktop comes up with all my icons and i can use
everything as if i had logged in. i'm really at a loss on what the problem
is, my cousin has a profile and he can log on with no problems what so ever.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bit odd if your cousin can log in fine.

One solution would be to create a new profile and copy your files across

You could check that the value of 'Shell' (right pane) at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
(start > regedit)

is 'explorer.exe'

and that there is no similar 'Shell' entry in the right pane (shouldn't be
one) at

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
