I know Vista Ultimate can only be installed on one PC. However, will it work
if I take out the hard drive and put it into another PC? thanks

Assuming you can get all the drivers to play nicely, which isn't as easy
as it sounds, it should work for three days, then if you don't reactivate
it, it will go into reduced functionality mode.

If you are looking for a portable OS, check out Linux distros like Puppy.

The chances are: NO.
You will be putting it in a computer with new hardware; so, it thinks it is
a new computer you are installing it in.
..
Even if you put it in exactly the same model computer, BIOS settings would
be different.

If it is an preinstalled OEM, it is tied to original computer via BIOS
settings.
If retail, you will have to reinstall it!

Most probably no. If the computers are nearly identical or identical it may
work but in most cases the hardware will be different enough that you will
encounter problems that can only be fixed with a repair install or a fresh
install.
